Chile launches a public consultation for the taxonomy of environmentally sustainable economic activities (T-MAS).

Initiative led by the Ministry of Finance aimed at establishing a classification system to identify and standardize economic activities considered environmentally sustainable in the country. This initiative, aligned with international best practices, seeks to promote responsible and sustainable investments.

Objectives:

The T-MAS is structured around six environmental objectives:

1. Climate change mitigation.

2. Climate change adaptation.

3. Sustainable use of water and marine resources.

4. Transition to a circular economy.

5. Prevention and control of pollution.

6. Conservation and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity.

For an economic activity to be considered sustainable according to T-MAS, it must meet the three minimum rules:

1. Substantially contribute to one or more environmental objectives.

2. Do no significant harm to any of the other environmental objectives.

3. Comply with minimum social safeguards.

Citizen Participation

The draft of the T-MAS is currently under public consultation, open from December 31 to January 31, 2025. During this period, participants are invited to submit comments and suggestions to help enhance the final document.

Importance

This tool aims to prevent "greenwashing," facilitate decision-making in financial markets, and guide companies and investors toward responsible practices. Additionally, the T-MAS is designed as a dynamic system, subject to updates to address future environmental changes and challenges.

The Ministry of Finance invites all citizens to participate through the Ministry's Citizen Participation website. This consultation represents an important step in Chile's commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change.
